On Saturday, March 30th, the Tony Verrino Memorial Gymnasium at Holy Name of Jesus School was transformed into a bustling hub of excitement for the annual Northern Ontario Fish Derby for Mental Health. Anglers of all ages and skill levels gathered to showcase their fishing prowess and support a great cause, thanks in part to the generous sponsorship from Hornepayne Power.
The event opened with a stirring rendition of the national anthem by Miss Scarlett O'Keefe, setting a patriotic tone for the day. Participants eagerly prepared their fishing gear, hoping to reel in the big one. The atmosphere was electric as friendly competition and community spirit filled the air.
The highlight of the derby was undoubtedly the Tall Tale Contest, where anglers shared their most exaggerated and entertaining fishing stories. This year's top honors went to Pascal Doiron and Charlie Paul, who captivated the audience with their imaginative and humorous tales.
Throughout the day, participants enjoyed not only the thrill of the competition but also the chance to connect with fellow fishing enthusiasts. The sense of camaraderie was palpable, as everyone came together to support mental health initiatives in the community.
In addition to the fishing derby, attendees savored a delicious community meal, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. The KidSport Fun Zone ensured that younger family members had plenty of activities to enjoy, making the event a true family affair.
The Northern Ontario Fish Derby for Mental Health was a resounding success, bringing together the community for a day of fishing, fun, and support for an important cause. A special thank you to Hornepayne Power for their sponsorship, which helped make this event possible. Congratulations to all the participants and winners, and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the event's success. Here’s to casting our lines again next year!
